It’s been a little while since I’ve written a post to share for Tuesdays on the Run and when I checked in tonight to see what the topic was for this week, I couldn’t resist. Tying in to St. Patrick’s Day, this week is all about lucky charms and race day rituals.
My race day rituals are nothing exciting but I definitely do have a lucky charm. And it has quite a twisty little tale to go along with it!
I first got my lucky charm back in February 2013, soon after I’d finished running the Goofy Challenge with my good friend Cori. During the copious number of hours we spent running together that weekend, we had discussed at length the magic and fairy dust that goes along with all things Disney. Somehow we kept coming back to the ridiculously magical powers of unicorns.
And one day, this little guy showed up in my mail box. A fun little present from Cori to remember our time at Goofy by. I decided I would keep him in my running belt as a kind of good luck charm and a way to run ‘with’ Cori even though we live in different provinces.
And so my little unicorn came along with me on all kinds of races and runs and I really felt that as long as he was there, I had luck on my side. Until the Rock n Roll Seattle Half Marathon in June 2013. In my ultimate wisdom, I decided to pin my little unicorn to my Spibelt and lo and behold the poor little guy fell off somewhere during the race, never to be seen again. Sigh.
I was pretty devastated he was gone.
But then one day a few months later, this second little guy showed up in my mailbox. After a lengthy search to find exactly the same unicorn pin, Cori had finally found one and once again, provided me with my much-needed and now missed good luck charm. Cori is just that kind of friend and I love her for it.
So now my new little unicorn stays safely tucked away behind a zipper where he cannot fall out. He usually stays in my hydration vest but for races where I wear my water belt, I take him out and carefully tuck him away so he’s still with me.
He’s been along for the ride for so long now that I know he brings me good luck but more than anything, I like that having him along is kind of like having Cori along on my runs with me too. We got each other through the Goofy Challenge and I like to think we’ve gotten each other to so many other tough runs and races too.
