Yep, that’s right. Super random post today about things that smell.

1. Old water belt bottles

So after my last big race (Rock ’n’ Roll Vancouver on Oct 26) I got home and ditched my gear in the perennial dumping ground: my laundry room counter. Somewhere along the line, probably in an effort to hurriedly clean the house, the belt got stashed up in the cupboard back where I usually keep it. Only thing is, the leftover electrolyte drink didn’t get emptied.

Fast forward a few weeks and I noticed a very strange smell coming from the cupboard. Yuck. I unloaded everything on the shelf only to discover that what drink was left had leaked into the plastic container the belt was stored in and everything (race medals, gloves, hats, bibs) was soaked.

Soaked with smelly, fermented rotten old sports drink! Yuck. I suppose I should be pleased that my beloved Skratch is actually made with enough real fruit that it CAN ferment like that (and I am, I love that stuff) but holy cow, stinky!

I got my water belts all washed but still need to soak the stink out of my race medal ribbons!

2. Orthotics

You know what else in the running world stinks? Orthotics.

I don’t know what possessed me to do this but one day when I was changing my orthotics into my other running shoes, I decided to sneak a little sniff and woooheee! Those orthotics were ripe! This incident was at a particularly rainy time of year when I was out on the trails a lot and all that mud has a very particular smell all its own but it was a good reminder to keep those puppies rinsed and aired out.

Mud is fun but it does NOT smell good!

3. My laundry

A lot of people are sensitive to smelly laundry but not me, there is nothing more cozy and heart warming to me than pulling a huge load of laundry out of the dryer and sniffing it’s clean, warm scent. That smells like happy right there.

As I was folding my laundry yesterday, I noticed that it was particularly scented (even my run gear!), like more than usual, even though I did my laundry the same way as always. Does scent permeate your clothes differently at different times of year? A function of temperature or humidity maybe?

Hmm, something seems to be different about my laundry lately because it smells wonderful!

4. What does ‘awesome’ smell like?

Two things that don’t stink are my shiny, brand new Polar V800 GPS watch and my beautiful new Mizuno Wave Rider 18s that both graced my mailbox in the past week. If ‘awesome’ had a smell, these babies would stink to high heaven of it!

My brand new beauties. I smile and pet these guys every time I walk by...

5. But you know what kind of stinks?

This week is a pretty busy one for us here in my family. My evenings have been full with school meetings, Hubby’s commitments, Vancouver Marathon meetings and movie nights at my son’s school. I had planned all of my runs and workouts for during the day while the boys are at school.

Sadly, my poor youngest isn’t feeling well so he’s been home all week. It’s been kind of fun holing up in the house in our jammies while he rides this out but it kinda stinks that I’ve had to pre-empt all my runs when I have this rad new stuff to use. That’s okay, it’s looking like I can probably get out tonight and besides, Coach gets back from vacation tomorrow so I’m pretty sure I’ll have no shortage of time to test out my new goodies!

Aww! Hope your little guy feels better soon! There seems to be something going around lately, as a lot of people have been dealing with random bouts of flus and colds.

I have a super sensitive sense of smell, so I really can’t handle a lot of things that smell bad. Scented candles and wax melts have been my saving grace. That and baking — nothing beats the smell of freshly baked cookies, muffins, or loaves 😀
